The Whiskies Wot Peter Bought : Bruichladdich 8 Year Old

Why did I buy it?
I was fairly early into my whisky journey and I’d heard much about Bruichladdich. Ralfy.com and a few other reviewers raved about them. They were perceived as a cool and trendy distillery, and even labeled themselves the “Progressive Hebridean Distillers” on their packaging. I’d also read and watched a few different things about their master distiller, Jim McEwan and his penchant for talking to his casks as he sampled them; earning him the title “The Cask Whisperer”. This was very peculiar; but I am always drawn to the peculiar.

Where did I buy it?
From the one place a whisky geek shouldn’t really buy whisky. The airport. Yes, there is a few interesting travel retail exclusives, but quite a few on the shelves there are being bought as gifts and fulfilling a part of the market that us obsessives aren’t a part of. Which is fine, I have no problem with that. You can still pick up some decent stuff at the airport; Glenfiddich Age of Discovery range is something I’d probably take a chance on next time I’m in an airport, and Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series is another that intrigues me.
I saw an interesting bottling from an interesting distillery and I took a punt, it’s what I do!

Have I opened it?
Yes opened it, left it, came back to it, left it again, came back to it, and finished it.

Unpeated Islay, a rarity

Review

Nose: Dry, White wine, pear drops, very spirit heavy as you’d expect for a young whisky at 50%abv

Palate: Can definitely taste the malted barley, sharp and spirit driven, menthol sweets, sour lemon too

Finish: Dry, grainy and grassy. Arrives with a spirit-y punch but disappears quickly too

Too spirit-driven and dry for my palate
